ACT 1
1. What is the point of
the first scene (literally) and in reference to the whole play?
The point of the first scene is to setup the good and evil theme.
2. What does Duncan call
Macbeth when he hears Macbeth has defeated Macdonwald?
O valiant worthy gentleman
3. Who is sentenced to death?
The Thane of Cawdor is
sentenced to death.
4. What do the witches predict in Act I, Scene 3 for
Macbeth? For Banquo?
Macbeth
He will
become king of Scotland, and Thane of Cawdor
Banquo
His sons will
become kings.
5. What news does Ross bring Macbeth?
Ross tells Macbeth of
Macbeth’s new title, and that he won the war for Scotland.
6. Banquo, like Macbeth, is surprised that the witches
have predicted Macbeth’s new title. He is, however, leery. What
does he say about the motives of the “instruments of darkness” ?
He says that although
they speak some truth their general purpose is to harm you in a much larger
way.
7. Malcolm describes Cawdor’s last moments before
execution. What is Duncan ’s reply?
That he had trusted
Cawdor, and you can never tell is someone is lying to you.
8. Macbeth says, “Stars, hide your fires. Let not
light see my black and deep desires.” What are Macbeth’s desires?
He wants the title of the
King, and he is thinking about ways to get it; for example, murder.
9. After Lady Macbeth
reads the letter, what does she tell us is her opinion of Macbeth, and how does
she plan to help him?
She thinks that Macbeth
is weak and a coward, and won’t be able to follow through with getting what he
wants. Which is why she plans on helping him kill Duncan.
10. What is Lady
Macbeth’s “prayer” to the spirits after she learns Duncan is missing?
She wishes to not have
any emotions for killing Duncan, and wishes to be manlylike in order for her to
be brave enough to carry out her plans.
11. What advice does Lady Macbeth give Macbeth when he
arrives home?
Act calm, and welcoming,
she will do the hard work, but if others suspect what they are up to, then they
will be found out.
12. What are Macbeth’s arguments to himself against
killing Duncan ?
His arguments are that he
and Duncan are related, he is
Duncan’s subject, he is his guest, and that Duncan is a good and virtuous ruler.
13. What arguments does Lady Macbeth use to convince
Macbeth to commit the murder?
She said that the witches
said he would be king so, it was meant to be, and if he didn’t do it, then he
would be seen as a coward.
